098L4-16 is a shorthand way of showing engine size & type. For example, 098L4-16 means that this is a 98 CID inline 4 cylinder gas engine, also known by foreigners as a 1.6 litre engine.
The breakdown is as follows:
-   1) The numbers (not always used) before the letter(s) show the size in cubic inches for Americans
-   2) The next letter(s) show the type of engine:
-   'C' means Cleveland
-   'L' means inline
-   'M' means modified
-   'P' means cylinders are in 180 degree opposition to each other, i.e. Subaru
-   'R' means rotary
-   'V' means V type
-   'W' means Windsor
-   3) The next number(s) show the number of combustion chambers
-   4) The next symbol shows the type of fuel:
-   '-' means gas
-   '=' means diesel
-   '~' means propane
-   5) The last set of numbers shows the engine size in decilitres for foreigners (to convert to litres, add decimal point between last two digits)
Examples:
-   300L6-49 means 300 CID inline 6 cylinder gas, 4.9 litre
-   488V10-80 means 488 CID V10 gas, 8.0 litre
-   379V8=62 means 379 CID V8 diesel, 6.2 litre
